A Prayer for July 30, 2021

7/30/2021

Good morning friends.
I feel like we’re in the 9th inning stretch of summer.  I’m excited that the Toronto Blue Jays are having their first game back home today.  I’m excited that it’s a little cooler – for the sake of a less sweaty workout.  I’m excited that there are only 2 sleeps left until vacation.

I wonder what you’re doing this summer for vacation?  Are you getting away?  Are you doing a stay-cation?  Are you doing what you normally do – work, cottage, etc.?  In the month of August, I encourage you to try/do something just a little different to shake things up.  It could be taking a drive to somewhere you haven’t been (or haven’t been to in quite a while), or visiting someone you haven’t seen (safely), learning something new or more…

A prayer for us today:
God of all, embrace us in this summer.  Embrace our restfulness, playfulness, busyness, restlessness or however we are.  Embrace our moods as they vary through the experiences of the day and help us to be kind and good to ourselves and to one another.  God of all, keep us safe as we travel, as we explore, and as we may try new things.  May those who are suffering feel you comforting them, those who are lonely feel you supporting them, and those who are tired feel you holding them.  And God, if COVID can end so things can be back to normal in September, that’d be great.  We’re just gonna throw that out there…. Be with us this day and all our days. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

A Prayer for July 26, 2021

Ahhhhh. Picture it. A day at the beach and not many people are around. You can lay your towel down and set a few things out for your beach time. You see a few familiar faces but they're focused on their family time, which is great, because you're feeling you just need a little 'you time'.

The water is the perfect temperature. The sun is out but it's not humid. The sand isn't too hot to the touch. The smell of the sea breeze is refreshing and the sounds are so relaxing.

What do you do next? Are you up for a swim? Do you read a book? Have a snack? People watch? Hmmmmm. I'd be in that water so fast...

Today, I hope you are able to take a breath, with that image in mind. I hope you have a few moments to think "yay, a new week is upon us" and you're ready to conquer it. Mine looks a little overwhelming as I try to squeeze a lot in so I feel better about putting work aside for August. But I also broke that list down into feasible chunks with some time to breathe... and to visit.

A prayer for us today:
God of all, thank you for the gift of another day. Thank you for imaginations, images, sights, sounds, and dreams. Be with us as we start off the week. Calm our anxieties, grant us grace, and infuse us with gratitude and kindness. Be with all who are taking part in the Olympics - may they be safe, as well as the residents. We hold Art & Carol in our prayers in hopes that they are getting what they need in this time. We hold all those who are recovering from surgeries and all those who are living with illness or disease as well, knowing that you are with them... and praying that they are comfortable and have the care they need. Be with those who are lonely, O God, and may they know that many of us are just a call/text/email/message away. Be our strength when we feel weak, our hope when we feel hopeless and our joy when we're feeling less joyful. Help us to hear your song in our hearts.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

It's Friday! Yay! For those heading to the cottage we wish you safe travels. For those staying home and doing the things we do on the weekends, we wish you joy. And for those who have no idea what the weekend will bring, we wish you well.

A prayer for us today:
God of all our days, thank you for creating the sun and the moon to mark our days. Help us to enjoy them as they shine through the clouds. May we be mindful and listen to the sounds outside and appreciate the music the animals make and the aromas of the outdoors. Be with our friends who are recovering from floods and mudslides as they may be experiencing more rainy weather. Be with our friends who are preparing for or are fleeing from wildfires. Be with our friends who are awaiting test results, who are undergoing treatments, and who are anxious about what may come their way. Hold us all in the palm of your hand, O God, as we live out our days with hope, peace, love and joy to the best of our ability. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

A prayer for July 19, 2021

The mid-point of July has come and gone, some of our summer fading away, right before our very eyes. We've had days of 'holy humid batman' and 'it's supposed to rain' and days where the outdoors call your name.

Today, I pray that you might be able to take advantage of a little time outdoors, hopefully doing something you enjoy. I hope that it's not done simply because it has to be done (like a walk, because the doctor said so) but more like a walk because you love the sights, smells and sounds of nature.

A prayer for us today:
Creator God, thank you for the beauty of our world. For the singing birds, the smell of the freshly mowed grass and for the beauty in the flowers and trees that we walk by. May we experience and appreciate the beauty in our world, while also remembering that we, too, are of that same world. Help us, O God, to see the beauty within ourselves and each other. Encourage us to share some really nice words with those we encounter so we can hear the song that is in their hearts. Be with us this day and all our days, in strength, courage and in faith. Amen.

Welcome to Step 3 of re-opening in Ontario and a nice looking Friday morning.

I anticipate more traffic on the roads today and seeing restaurants overwhelmed with patrons. I think of those who have been longing to do some of the things they've missed doing, who have patiently waited for their 2nd vaccine dose and waited out the time it takes for it to give us more immunity.

Continue to give a little space when you're out and about and to do what you need to keep yourself safe and healthy.

Today's prayer:
Creator and Creating God, be with us this day as we may be out and about doing some things we've missed doing. Be with businesses as they take in more customers and help us to be grateful, patient, and grace-filled customers with the understanding that there may be a number of new employees that are starting today. Be with all our friends who are suffering or who are ill, those who have loved ones in hospital and are under care as they see what long-term changes may lay ahead, those who are struggling to find work, those trying to find themselves, and those who are struggle just to get out of bed each day. Wrap them in your love and in ours. May the weekend ahead be filled with safe travels, fair weather and memory making moments. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen

Welcome to another Monday morning. I hope this post finds you well and a little excited for Step 3 that starts in a few days.

Mondays are usually my day off, so I get to rest and play a little most of the day. I kind of like sharing a prayer each Monday with you too, though. It's a great way to start my week - centred in God and focused in faith.

I'm wondering what day(s) you take for you during the week. What kinds of things do you do or don't do?

Here's our prayer for today:
On the first day, O God, you began creating. You created such an amazing world that works together and sustains itself. Each day you took the time to be intentional about what to create and you called it good. I thank you for the Sabbath, where we have permission to rest from our work and to connect with you. For those of us who had our Sabbath and the new week begins, help us to sustain our energy for the week ahead. Be within us when unexpected things arise and when we are confronted by others who may not be satisfied with the service we provide. Continue to be within us as we share your grace and mercy in our world, hopefully with all those we encounter. Be with those who are longing for healing, those who are holding onto hope, those who experiencing more darkness than light in their lives, and those who are trying to find their purpose in life. May you shine within us as we are with them. Thank you, O God, for the gift of life. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

As I think of what life will be like when things open up like they used to be, I wonder what things will be different when we return to 'normal'. Will people who aren't feeling well wear masks when they go out? Will hand sanitizer be a thing we do as we enter public spaces? Will capacity limits be a thing for a while, and if so, at what numbers? Will businesses offer employees sick days? Do we ask folks what precautions to take before we go over for a visit?

These really are small questions in the bigger picture of gatherings. I don't think it will matter much because we long to be together. We miss visiting with family and friends, holding hands and giving hugs, singing and dancing, praying and playing. I'm okay if someone asks me to wear a mask when visiting them, to keep them healthy and safe. I'm okay carrying hand sanitizer in my bag. I'm okay staying home if I'm unwell.

I wonder what you're wondering about in a post-pandemic world. I wonder what things you hope will continue and what things you can't wait to ease up.

A prayer for today:
God of all, as we see numbers decline in our area, help us to continue to keep each other safe. We give thanks that you walk this journey with us and guide us in ways that are community-minded. We pray for all those who are in hospital and pray that they feel your presence surrounding them. Continue to be in those who are working to heal them. Be with all of us who may be traveling or preparing to go out into places we haven't been in quite some time. Share with us your light and love in the world and may that light and love shine abundantly through us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

A prayer to start off our week:
Loving God, hold us tightly in your embrace as we start the week. Help us to prepare our souls for what is to come. Grant us the grace accept your forgiveness where we fall short. And especially be with those who are in hospital or in the care of others. God of all, help us to do amazing things and be incredible people for your will. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Happy belated Canada Day!

Yesterday the family celebrated Canada Day quietly.  I took the time to think about how families throughout the country would be celebrating.  They have traditions of get-togethers and fireworks.  Some joined a walk in honour of the children who never made it home.  Mine was filled with reflecting – the many good things we have in Canada, like healthcare, education, freedoms and so forth but then thinking about it all, I was reminded that not everyone has equal access to any of these and some of it is culturally or racially biased.  I am reminded that this is based on the past, but I feel we are being shifted (maybe even trampolined) forward.  And it won’t be easy.

My journal entry to remember this Canada Day and how it impacts my soul:
God forgive us, for we know not what we do, when we say something that is harmful to another even when they are not there.
Forgive us when we are hesitant to believe things that feel so outrageous that we hang onto hope that the stories are false.
Forgive us when we think we know everything, or when we think we know what’s best, forgetting that we all have a journey that’s as unique as our souls.
Forgive us when we remain silent when someone hurts another.

Help us to move forward.
Help us to heal the things of our heart that cause us to be something we wish we weren’t.
Help us to look at the things of our past, the norms of society that we grew up with, and to reflect and assess them in how we are in our world today.
Help us to continue to learn, to ask questions, and to be sensitive to those we encounter when asking questions.

Thank you…
Thank you for your love, forgiveness, kindness and grace.
Thank you for opening our eyes and hearts to things we need to know.
Thank you for this beautiful country and land that we share with so many.
Thank you for those who allow us to be here and who encourage us to thrive in our lives.

And I pray:
O God, in the humility and naivety of my heart, I wish you could wipe our souls clean from the past so we have a fresh start.  But I know it is not possible.  I know that all the things that happen through life, and life before us, is for us to learn from as we do our best to help reach the goal of creating heaven on earth. When we ache for ourselves and others, embrace us in your love and care.  When we don’t know what to do or which way to go, nudge us with your Spirit.  God be in us, around us and within us in everything we do, everywhere we go, and in everyone we encounter.  Help us to be the living embodiment of love, respect, and grace.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
