He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” (Luke 22:44)
Loving God, we give thanks for the words in Scripture that provide us with truth and understanding. Help us discern in our hearts what they mean for each of us today. May your love and light shine brightly through them. Grant us permission to be confused. Grant us grace as we learn and grow not only in your word but also in our faith and spirituality. Your love may be hard to live out, but we will do our best to do so. God be with us all our days. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. (Luke 24:45)
Living God, help us to open our Bibles and to dig into Words that draw us closer to your divine truth. As we live out our days, sometimes it’s hard to see you. With us, may your love and light take over our world so that there is no more hatred or racism or discrimination. We pray that Scriptures guide us in disagreeing and in fully loving one another in gracious ways. God, help our human selves learn to be more divine, but keep us humble within it. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:46-47)
Eternal God, forgive our sins. Forgive any pain we have caused, any harms we have done to others (knowingly or unknowingly), for any negativity that sits heavy on us. We know you ask us to be better and do better. Sometimes that is hard. Thank you for your healing and comforting embrace that strengthens us as we forgive ourselves and others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

“You are witnesses of these things.” (Luke 24:48)
Hope-filled God, we bear witness to beautiful things each day. We give thanks for those who are advocating for change, for our commitment for caring for the earth in better ways, for your challenge to understand our neighbours who are not like us, and for your love that goes beyond human understanding. Thank you for the challenges that come our way and for the perspective to turn them into opportunities. Thank you for all the resources we have at hand so that we can help others and bear witness through action and service. God, thank you for the gift of life and the things we get to see. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothes with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)
Caring God, your promises are above all else. Thank you for the Spirit in our midst and the guidance given. We give thanks for the humble power you give your servants in our world and pray that they serve in loving, caring, and compassionate ways. Place on us the power of prayer, the power of peace, and the power of comfort, even if it’s solely to care for ourselves. Thank you for our beloved Jesus. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. (Luke 24:50)
Parenting God, we pray for families today. We pray for strength to get through the rough days, for patience to get through the trying days, and love to get through the days when the kids don’t seem to like us at all. We pray for the spirits and energy of little ones never to be diminished or squashed. Help us to love and guide little ones in caring ways. And God, shine a light on what you call us to do and be in our world, our communities, and in our churches. Our children are not the church of tomorrow as they are in the church today. Challenge them to surprise us of your love in a different way. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. (Luke 24:51-52)
Praise-worthy God, we give you thanks for the story of Ascension and that Jesus’ life continues through the Spirit and in our hearts. As we gather for worship this morning, help us to celebrate with joy and humour in our hearts. Guide us in your great light and share with us your hope in our world. May we sing and pray with laughter and light in our hearts. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
